Some of the tech boosts include increased texture resolutions thanks to an exponentially higher polygon count on trees, rocks, mountains, soldiers and weapons. "You can even see the dirt beneath their fingernails," said executive producer Mark Rubin during our recent trip to Infinity Ward's new studio.
Displacement mapping increases the number of polygons dedicated to objects as the player moves through the game. And another technology called Sub D smartly does all this in real time, smoothing edges on leaves, guns, helmets and anything else to eradicate that blocky look that has always been a hallmark that can suspend belief for some players.
